It’s no secret that here at Camiral, golf is our favoured sport and pastime. So much so that it can sometimes be easy to overlook the other exciting sporting events that take place in the region. The glamorous and adrenaline-pumping Moto GP came to Catalunya last week, 4th June, taking place at Barcelona’s impressive Circuit de Catalunya.
After a wet start to the day, the track dried up in the afternoon and the race got well underway, with Repsol Honda Team’s Dani Pedrosa shooting out ahead. Hotly pursued by Yamaha’s Ben Spies and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Andrea Dovizioso, it was Catalunyan Jorge Lorenzo who stormed to victory for Yamaha. Lorenzo beat Pedrosa by just 5 seconds, and was clearly elated to be walking away with the chequered flag in front of his home crowd.
Built in 1991, and host to the Spanish Grand Prix, the 4.655km Circuit de Catalunya has been the site of some seriously memorable racing moments. In 1991, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell went down the entire front straight side-by-side while duelling for second place. In 1994, Michael Schumacher managed to finish in second place despite driving over half the race with only fifth gear. In 1996, Schumacher took his first win as a Ferrari driver, after a dominant performance during a torrential rainstorm. The lap record is held by Ferrari driver, Kimi Raikkonen, who completed the track in 1:21:670 in 2008.
