Miguel Angel Jiménez, who recorded a remarkable victory at The 2014 Open de España, proved why he is such a popular champion when he took time out to celebrate with staff at Camiral Resort.
Long after the crowds had gone, Jiménez – in a champagne drenched shirt and smoking a cigar – joined staff outside the clubhouse for an impromptu celebration in which he was cheered and applauded.
The 50-year-old had been the star attraction all week at Camiral Resort, spending time after each round having his picture taken with families and signing autographs for children.
Julio Delgado, Chief Executive of Camiral Resort, said: “It was the gesture of a true champion to share his moment of glory with the people who have worked so hard to make The 2014 Open de España the success it has been.
“From the condition of the Stadium Course, which was described as major championship standard, to the five-star hospitality, our team showed why Camiral Resort is deserving of the title of best golf course in Spain and a world-class destination. We are honoured to have Miguel Angel Jiménez as our winner.”
It was Jiménez’s 21st European Tour title and his first Open de España victory. He played in both previous editions of the country’s national Open held at Camiral Resort, in 2000 and 2009 – and he has seen the resort, a European Tour Destination, develop in that time.
“The facilities here are very good,” said Jiménez in a video interview for the Camiral Resort website. “You have two golf courses, chipping areas, a nice driving range, and a beautiful putting green – it’s an outstanding place.”
