The Ryder Cup Evaluation Committee have completed the first day of their visit to inspect the full details of the Costa Brava – Barcelona 2022 bid at first hand, one of the proposed candidates to host the most important golfing event in the world, contested between teams from Europe and the US. If the bid is successful, the competition will take place at the Camiral Resort (Girona).
An official presentation was planned to take place in Barcelona on Wednesday, as part of the visit programme. However, the schedule has been severely disrupted as a result of the tragic plane crash in the French Alps, in which at least 49 people of Spanish nationality died. As a result, the presentation was suspended.
The Ryder Cup Evaluation Committee, led by Richard Hills, started the morning with a visit to the Town Hall in Lloret de Mar (Girona), in order to attend a technical seminar on key aspects of the bid, such as institutional support, infrastructure, commercial opportunities, and developing levels of golf participation.
Later on, the delegation visited the facilities at the Camiral Resort, the chosen venue for the Costa Brava – Barcelona 2022 bid. The bid team have until 30 April to submit a final bid dossier to the Ryder Cup Europe Selection Committee.
Following this date, the Ryder Cup Europe management team will conduct a detailed analysis of the bid proposals, with the assistance of an independent panel of experts, before announcing the successful host venue in autumn 2015.
Germany, Austria, Italy and Portugal have also announced official bids to host the 2022 Ryder Cup.
The Costa Brava – Barcelona 2022 bid team offered their condolences to the families of the victims of the plane crash in the French Alps.
