The Legends Behind the Legendary Courses at Camiral
It is clear from merely viewing the spectaular sweeping images of Camiral that it was designed by a team with an eye for the best that golf has to offer. It is no surprise then, that two of golf’s greatest individuals, Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo can be attributed to the stunning creations that are Camiral’s Stadium and Tour courses.
Commenting on the development at the Spanish Open in 2009, Angel Gallardo said, ‘I remember when I first saw the site and thought it would make such a natural golf course – I could immediately see where the holes were going to go. It was as if nature had created the course.’
A professional golfer, Angel Gallardo enjoyed great success when he won the Portuguese Open in 1967, the Mexican Open in 1971 and the Italian Open in 1977. On top of all these accolades Gallardo’s proudest moment came in 1970 when he won his country’s national title the Open de Espana.
Meanwhile the legendary Neil Coles MBE has one of the longest professional golfing careers in the modern era and has claimed 25 European Tour titles as well as representing Great Britain and Ireland in the Ryder Cup eight times. If that wasn’t enough, in 2002, Coles, at the noble age of 67 won the Lawrence Batley tournament, making him the oldest winner of a professional tournament in the past six decades.
Clearly then, Gallardo and Coles can also add the creation of the highly ranked courses at Camiral to their long lists of achievements. As Neil Coles explains, ‘Angel and I have been working on this golf course for nearly 20 years and we are very proud to see it recognised among the best golf courses in the world.’ And so they should be as this course really is, to quote Coles, ‘a magnificent spectacle.’
